The Kiowa
State Wildlife Management Area was designated as an Important
Bird Area in 2004. Species that nest here include American
Avocets, Burrowing Owls, Black-necked Stilts and maybe
Short-eared Owls. Canada Geese, Mallards and other waterfowl
also nest here. Kiowa SWMA is 640 acres including
grassland and wetlands with open water and marshes. It is
located 2 miles south of Morrill NE just south of the river and
over the railroad tracks on South Morrill Road. There are also
private ponds on the east side of the road on CR F and CR G. The
viewing platform is on the west side of the road on the hill.
This area is open to hunting and trapping during
regular seasons but is closed from Dec 12 to Jan 15th to provide
a safe sanctuary for migrating waterfowl, the viewing platform
is open for use year around.
This is an excellent site to view
shorebird during migration, especially in the spring.
