USGS Bird List

The NPNWR was established in 1916.
Lake Minatare, Lake Alice and Winter's Creek Lake are closed from October 1st through January 15th to provide sanctuary for nearly 200,000 migrating waterfowl
and 20 or more Bald Eagles.

Lake Minatare

From US Highway 26, travel north on Sugar Factory Road approximately 5 miles to Lake Minatare Road. Turn east and travel approximately 6 miles to Stonegate Road. Turn north, the entrance is approximately 1 mile on the east side of the road.  Lake Minatare is also a State Recreation Area for camping, fishing, boating and a state park permit is required.

Gulls at Lake Minatare

Lake Alice

From US Highway 26, travel north on Sugar Factory Road to County Road C (approximately 7 miles). Turn east on County Road C approximately 2 miles to the Lake on the left side of the road. Camping and fishing is permitted from designated areas. This is a good location for shorebirds during migration if there is any water in the lake at all.

For the 14th consecutive year, Bald Eagles are nesting at Lake Alice and at least two young are now hatched.A total of 30 eagles have fledged to flight from this nesting sight. A few years ago the nest blew down and a new one was constructed by the nesting pair. In years that the lake is dry the eagles feed their young prairie dogs instead of the normal fish. (2009)

Bald Eagle

Winter's Creek Lake

The Winters Creek entrance is just beyond the Lake Minatare entrance on the opposite side of the road. A road follows the south side of the lake. At the end of the road is an area you can park and hike into the area. The road is very close to the water and viewing waterfowl is easy from your car. This is one of the best locations in the area to view a large number of species of ducks and other waterfowl.
On the south-west side of the property Osprey have attempted to nest on a power pole and platform the past 2 years (2010)

Winter Ducks

State Line Island

From U.S. Highway 26 at Henry, Nebraska, travel south on Holloway Road approximately 1 mile to the entrance and parking area on the east side of the road. There are several hiking trails on the east and west side of the road along the river and near some small ponds.
