Backyard Sightings

On the 12th of March, 2006 I heard the loud noise of a starling and looked out the kitchen window, a Sharp-shinned Hawk had caught his lunch. I had my camera handy and got these pictures. After the last picture he flew off with his lunch into the trees.

May 22nd, Green Heron at Berggren Rd bridge. Great Egret south of Morrill at CR F Pond. Western Tanager on Old Stage Hill Rd, Lazuli Buntings on Carter Canyon Rd

May 20th, Red-headed Woodpecker showed up in the yard

May 10th, Lazuli Bunting, Western Tanagers

May 8th, Red-bellied Woodpecker in the yard

May 6, Yellow Warblers, Bullock's Oriole, Clay-colored and Chipping Sparrows in the yard. Yellow-rumps and Orange Crowed Warblers and Empids east of town.
Robins are feeding young in the nests around the yard.
 

 
April 30, Spotted Towhee and Brown Thrasher in the yard. Cardinals still showing up off an on

 April 22, Summer Tanager seen at the bee hives south of Lyman, same location as a couple years ago

April 7. Swainson's Hawk and Wilson's Snipe south of Morrill and Sandhill Crane pair at Kiowa WMA

April 5, Two female Northern Cardinals in our yard (very rare bird around here)

March 29, Turkey Vultures have returned

March 27, several hundred Sandhill Crane at Winter's Creek Lake

March 21, over 100 Mountain Bluebirds in the Buffalo Creek WMA area
 

 
March 10th (also seen in February) Golden-crowned Kinglet east of Scottsbluff and Brown Creeper in Scottsbluff

March 6th, Mountain and possible Eastern Bluebirds in the Wildcat Hills

 
March 4th A white Eurasian Collared-dove was in our yard. The pictures were taken out of a window and the c-doves were kind of far a way so they aren't very good.
I couldn't tell if it had red eyes or normal colored eyes. The feathers were white with cream colored edges. The bill and legs were a normal color and it has a nice dark collar. As you can see it was hanging out with a normal colored c-dove.  Only saw it the one day.  (the c-dove is still here April 6th)


February 19

Many Bald Eagles around the rivers and wetlands
Great Horned Owl on nest south of Morrill in same area as previous years

February 11, Report of White-winged Doves that have been at Gering feeder for several weeks

February 5-7th, Golden Crowned Kinglets east of Scottsbluff

January 16th & 23 Gray-crowned Rosy-finches at the Scotts Bluff National Monument

January 17,
31+ Bald Eagles at the Scottsbluff Sewer Lagoons (over 40 have been reported this past weekend)
Cedar Waxwings reported in Carter Canyon along with Townsend Solitaries

November 21st, Pine Siskins starting to show up at the feeders again
2 Bald Eagles seen north of the Scottsbluff Landfill
Northern Shrike seen south of Gering

November 20th,  5 Snow Geese flying over Scottsbluff

November 7th, American Goldfinches finally coming back to the feeders

October 24-25 Black-capped Chickadee in the yard for the first time in ages! Also Orange-crowned Warblers, Juncos, White-crowned Sparrows.

October 12, 2009. Spotted Towhees and more White-crowned Sparrows

October 10. Orange-crowned Warblers in the yard after the snow storm

October 8th. Rough-legged Hawk between Scottsbluff and Mitchell

October 3rd, Ruby-throated Hummingbird at the feeders (still here on the 6th)
the hummer stayed through the snow storms and freezing weather. Last seen at the feeder the evening of  of October 17th

October 2, White-crowned Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos in the yard.

August 19th
Adult and Juv. Red-headed Woodpeckers have been around since last week.

Humingbirds are late this year, finally showing up now after one lone sighting July 12th, had Rufous  a few days ago and now 2 Broad-taileds.
Broad-taileds and Calliopes have been seen out near the Wildcat Hills and there have been a few other sightings the past week or so.

 
June 27, Sandhill Crane at Facus Springs have one nearly grown chick

June 21, Little Blue Heron seen at Kiowa WMA south of Morrill took a very bad picture into the sun and though the scope. This is a new Nebraska bird for me
also Great Egret was seen

June 18th Sandhill Crane are still at Kiowa WMA, also two Forster's Terns

June 5th, Great Crested Flycatcher at State Line Island NWR south of Henry NE
Also a Bald Eagle flying along the river.

May 24th, Lazuli Buntings, Blue-gray Flycatchers, YB Chats, Indigo Bunting seen on Old Stage Hill Rd and Carter Canyon Rd

May 23rd, pair of Sandhill Cranes just west of Kiowa WMA, first sighting of them here in the summer (pair at Facus Springs WMA have two chicks)

9 Sandhill Cranes, 1000s Snow Geese, 100+ Ross's Geese, 15 White-Fronted Geese, Cackling Geese, 4 Bald Eagles, 1 Golden Eagle, 115 Ring-billed Gulls, good numbers of ducks

February 14th, Snow Geese are showing up in large flocks

January 22, pair of Hooded Mergansers at Chilibaba, 1000s of Canada Geese at the lakes and ponds in the area, Golden Eagle near Winter's Creek Lake

January 21st, Common Redpoll at the feeder at the kitchen window

January 3rd, we have a Song Sparrow at the pond in the back yard and at least one Pink Sided Junco with the others.
